Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly launching a bid for New York City mayor, aiming to transform the city into a leading global hub for cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence (AI), and technology.

As part of his strategic platform, Cuomo plans to coordinate initiatives across key industries such as blockchain, AI, and biotechnology. His proposals include:

  • Establishing a new Chief Innovation Officer position to attract investments and create jobs.
  • Forming an Innovation Council with three dedicated advisory committees for crypto, AI, and biotechnology. This council would advise on adoption, workforce development, and regulatory streamlining for these emerging sectors.

Cuomo brings prior experience in the crypto space, having advised the crypto exchange OKX during a federal probe. Should his reported plans materialize, this move could potentially shift NYC from a strict enforcement regime to one that actively attracts industry talent and fosters financial innovation, leveraging Wall Street's significant capital concentration.

Concurrently, current NYC Mayor Eric Adams has already taken proactive steps by establishing America's first municipal Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology. This office aims to promote the responsible use of digital assets, expand economic opportunities for New Yorkers, attract world-class talent, and reinforce the city's status as a global hub for financial and technological innovation.

Cuomo is set to compete against other candidates to succeed Adams, including Zohran Mamdani, who is considered a frontrunner and has been characterized by some in the crypto industry as "anti-innovation," and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. The election is scheduled for November 4.
